A History of Rock Music in Ukrainian
A History of Rock Music in Ukrainian is a collection of British and American classic rock and pop songs re-interpreted with a high-octane eastern European twist by John Peel favourites The Ukrainians.
What if …….. Pop culture came to Britain from the East, not America?
What if ……..You listen to great music in a language not your own?
What if ……. The cool new instrument wasn’t the guitar, but the electric mandolin?
Style-wise, A History of Rock Music in Ukrainian is an intoxicating cocktail of traditional Ukrainian music and Western Indie pop/rock. The tracks are raw, fresh and electrifying. Vodka-fuelled fiddles, accordion and mandolins interweave beautifully with powerful drums, driving bass and wonderfully zizzy electric guitars.
The Ukrainians will be touring in Europe to promote the album, including UK dates throughout May and June 2015.
The Ukrainians are notorious for their Ukrainian language versions of classic
Western rock and pop songs. The band has previously released ‘Ukrainianised’ versions of songs by The Smiths, Prince and The Sex Pistols. The Ukrainians’ classic 1992 ‘Pisni Iz The Smiths’ EP was re-released on 12 inch vinyl for Record Store Day 2013, and their Pistols’ covers album ‘Never Mind The Cossacks’ for Record Store Day 2014.
The Ukrainians’ cross-category appeal has meant that for 25 years they have wowed audiences at many hundreds of festivals throughout Europe and North America, including both Glastonbury and Womad in the UK.
Right... it’s time to put A History of Rock Music in Ukrainian onto your turntable. First, sink at least one double-shot of ice-cool vodka. Secondly, turn the volume up to 11. Thirdly, totally immerse yourself in the poetic sound of the Ukrainian language
and finally, give in to the pure, life-affirming energy of the band that is… The Ukrainians!
