Brudenell Presents...
Babybird
The F-Word Tour + Tony Wright (Terrorvision)
For 30 years the press have misconstrued babybird. But like all myths, good or bad, it certainly got the name out there. We wouldn’t be where we are without it.
Don’t get me wrong, most words written about babybird were actually quite good. Our record company even made a book about it.
But of course journalists love puns and they used them endlessly : fledgeling, nests, beaks, wings, shells, you name it, they used it. The thesaurus was knackered.
They desperately needed reference points, but couldn’t find any, as babybird gave away no clues. babybird wasn’t pigeon-holeable (pun). It wasn’t Brit pop, it wasn’t pop, it wasn’t rock.....so the press called it difficult, obtuse, and even to this day, make daft puns referring to the name babybird whilst always referencing your gorgeous. But that’s their millstone, not mine :)
But music’s not about press - it’s just a advertising tool, an invisible thing you can’t even throw away or wrap a kebab in, because it’s all online.
So as one of the few people who actually know babybird down to the skin and bones, the simple truth is that babybird is a band that write monstrous lullabies for an unstable world- songs you want to shake your head at, or lie on a sofa and let it float into your ears like a ghost.
Here’s what some other people say, who know babybird well :
JOHNNY DEPP :
‘I stumbled across babybird some years ago. His music has been a constant companion ever since. Unnerving yet oddly comforting, there’s something about Stephen Jones’ creation that is so sweetly unsettling. He’s a dark bastard and one of the funniest fuckers I’ve had the pleassure to know. He’s a lyrical diamond...His is the witty wart upon the moronic mug of mediocrity.’
EDDIE IZZARD :
‘Babybird’s music is gorgeous except for their song, ‘You’re gorgeous’, which is actually ravishing.’
DOM JOLY :
‘I’ve always loved babybird. Bad old man - still one of my favourite songs ever - Was the first ever track used on Trigger Happy.’
BOB MORTIMER :
‘He has electric fingers. Heis authentic. His stories linger. I’m happy to be sad in his company.....In person he maybe a twat, but it diesn’t really matter.’
(T’s & C’s : None of these people are journalists.)
